My 6 Year Old Son Who Is Diagnosed With ADHD & Autism Is Taking Guanfacine. Any Agression?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Long Island, NY

We and his teachers noticed since taking it (which has been over a month now) his tantrums and aggression has been increase or intensified! He takes melatonin at night with his guanfacine to help him sleep. We were thinking of upping the dose but now i dont know. I need some advice. Anyone seeing the same with their child and what did you do next?

Wow I thought it was just my son. My son is taking Guanafacine and as well as melatonin. He only sleeps four hours and can't seems to sleep any longer. When ask the doctor what to to she suggested that I give him more melatonin when he wakes up at two a.m. So what I did was instead of putting him to bed at 8:00p.m. I changed bed time to 9:30 and cut the screening time 30 mins before. If and when he wakes up I give another small dose of melatonin and he's better at school because he had gotten more rest. Oh I also cut the naps out completely to make sure he only rest at night. Hope this helps.

Guanafacine works well for my son. However, we did discontinue a really common SSRI because of aggression. Everyone reacts differently to meds. As mom you are probably observing more of your kids moods and behaviors more than anyone else, go with your gut.

Everyone's body handles medicines differently. He may need to change to a different medicine. My son was on methylphenidate and guafacine. When we had trouble getting methylphenidate and he was only on guafacine, we saw a HUGE drop in his aggression. Talk with his doctor or psychiatrist (whoever handles his medicine). Don't worry, sometimes it just takes a little adjusting. You'll find what works best for him.

You may actually need to adjust the dose. I love guanfacine for my son it helps with the impulse control without the stimulant part - the stimulants make my son very anxious and aggressive. Guanfacine seems to help that. But everyone is different, so def worth talking to the doctor. I hope that it gets better for you guys!

My son has been less aggressive on guanfacine. He was on methylphenidate and he was super aggressive. Everyone's body processes things differently. I would absolutely try a different medicine to combat the aggression.

I hope you find something that works better for her.
