What Experiences Have You Had With Mood Stabilizing Moods With Kids? How About Blood Pressure Meds W/ ADHD Meds To Stabilize Mood?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is on an ADHD med, Vyvanse. Does anyone have experience using mood stabilizing medication with their children along with Vyvanse or other ADHD meds? How about the addition of blood pressure medication that has been seen to stabilize moodiness caused by ADHD meds?

My son is 8 years old, 78 pounds he is on vyvanse 40 mg due to his severe hyperactivity it has been a life saver for us. It does not give him the 12 hours starts wearing off by 4pm so we give him a small dose of tenex to keep him calmed and focus till bedtime at 8

We tried a bunch of mood stablizing drugs. Only abilify worked but it was temporary. My son's mood swings were extreme. We discovered neurotherpay and it made a huge difference.

I'm not an expert by any means, and this is only my personal opinion, but if it makes him really tired and spaces him out, I think he needs a different medication. I know a guy who was prescribed respiradone but he doesn't like to take it because he says that it makes him feel like a zombie. Perhaps something like Lexapro would work better? I recommend that you see the doctor that prescribed the respiradone and suggest that perhaps it would be better to prescribe him something else.

This is a really good question, I myself take ability for mood and it hasn’t been helping, plus it wakes me up at night a lot. My son is fixing to be 9 and his always had problems with irritability and sleep so I’m concerned this medicine for him would also cause that side effect of being up at night.

Intuniv has been out for about 1-1/2 yrs now. And you're correct, it is a time-released guanfacine. You could research it online and see what the results have been after a bit of time on the market. While I read the insert when it first came out, I don't know how effective patients have found it vs side effects.
