I need to here from parents that have tried Abilify with there child's mood and /or aggression. My son is 17 and will be starting it on Monday. What are common side effects? How fast does it start to work?

Members shared varied experiences with Abilify for children with mood and aggression challenges, with responses ranging from increased aggression, crying, and agitation in some children to helpful results in others, particularly when combined with other medications. Several members described difficult side effects including headaches, increased appetite, drowsiness, wetting accidents, and repetitive behaviors, while others reported needing to switch to alternatives like Risperdone, Seroquel, or other medications when Abilify did not work or worsened symptoms. A recurring theme was that finding the right medication is highly individual and often requires patience, close monitoring with doctors, and trial and error to discover what works best for each child.

William has been on abilify about a year. It has helped him. Puberty has brought on some behavioral issues and he also has cluster headaches. His appetite increased with abilify but think adolescence also influences appetite.

Day #6 on Abilify and very rough weekend with more aggression and very agitated and restless. His tantrums are longer with explosive angry outbursts and crying episodes. I will be calling his Dr. today. He also has been wetting himself which has never been an issue for him before. I’ve read finding the correct “cocktail” that works for each child takes time and a lot of trial an error.

Honestly, it will all depend on the child. Lennon started with risperodone and had a horrible reaction of sobbing uncontrollably and constant staring off. Abilify helped for a while, but then it felt back to square one. He's currently on Seroquel.

My son hasn't ever been on meds other than melatonin on occasion.
