Any Tips To Help Manage My Almost 3 Year Old When He Starts Hitting And Disregulates?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Matthews, NC

My son is level 2 autistic recently diagnosed, he has begun to hit himself and others (mainly me) when he gets overwhelmed or upset. I want him to express and let out his feelings the best he can but the hitting needs to stop or at the very least lessened. He is currently nonverbal and somewhat understands when we speak to him but his lack of focus makes it difficult for him to listen

Maybe start to use a hand sign (like ASL) for “need a break” - if adults use the sign and are responsive to whatever version your kid might use then he may learn to self-advocate in more ways as well. Hand signs can be extremely helpful in supporting the advancement of communication, even verbal. You can google “using hand signs in speech therapy ASD” for some good guidance.

If you can, create a quiet space with pillows and bean bag chairs he can have a few minutes to calm himself in. This has been pretty helpful for my son at school.
