Does Chewelry Work To Break The Habit Of Chewing On Fingers And Clothing?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
San Francisco, CA

Our 5-year old son has started putting his hand in his mouth almost all the time now. Sometimes he pulls his shirt up to his mouth and chews on that. The folks at the school have suggested that we buy "chewelry" -- something they can wear around their neck and chew on. We were thinking it would be better to break him of the habit rather than substituting something that seems like a pacifier for an older kid (he never used a pacifier as a baby). Any experiences with chewelry?

Chewelry has been such a good tool for my 4 year old. She can chew for hours. I get mine from ARK Therapeutic. They may seem a little pricey but the quality is absolutely amazing.

When Katelyn was younger we tried gum, pop rocks candy, and suckers. We thought that this would help with the sensory needs. We ended up finding out that she would do this when she was anxious and around alot of people. Try to find out the why of the behavior. Remember the chew necklace is only temporary until you find root of the reason that he does it.

If this is a sudden behavior, has he been to the dentist? does he have a sore tastebud? sore throat? dry mouth? I would look first at physical reason for any "new" behaviors.
Chewelery works for some and not for others. It really depends on the function of the mouthing... I have no diagnoses, and I was a shirt chewer/sucker until about 5th grade, I am "fine" and it stopped completely when I was allowed to chew gum in middle school. I myself prefer trying to see if gum is a option before going to chewlery...some people just gotta chew for me it is dry mouth and anxiety issue... I still chew many pieces of gum a day or always prefer to have a glass of water handy..

It worked for my son he used to chew his fingers until they bled. He liked the necklace not the bracelet type. But when he first got it I'd see him start to chew on his fingers or shirt then remind him of his necklace until he was used to it than that's what he'd grab for. Ps I got ours off wish and Amazon washed them when they came in and we were happy with them. Careful not to get a thin one made for a teething baby if he's a hard biter and some places charge 20 bucks when if you shop around you can find the same one for 5. I hope this helps

We got the wrist band kind--it looks like an athletic sweat band that he wears just above the wrist and we can redirect him to chew on that instead of his shirt--I think it instills some awareness in him but also gives him an alternative when he really needs to do it--thanks for all the comments. I'm guessing he might not even need the wrist band in a year. We'll see.
