How Do I Stop My 3 Year Old Autistic Boy From Chewing My Plugged In Phone Cords?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Bloomington, IN

My 3 year old autistic little boy chews on anything that is dangerous. For example he has chewed on batteries, change like metal coins, he chews on cords that are plugged in and recently has had an obsession to chew my phone cords that are plugged in. I have tried everything from discipline to putting the cords up to hidding the cords. He finds them every time or pulls them down i can't plug my phone in anywhere or his tablet cause he will unplug them from the device and chew them sometimes when… read more

Have you tried sour spray? My son used to chew everything in site til I started to spray that on almost everything he chewed. That worked great for us and still does some days.

This is a chewlery product that resembles an old style phone cord. Maybe he would like them? My DD loves her chewlery necklaces! We also use ARK brands

My son (now 5 1/2) always chewed on everything at 2 and 3. We found chewelry to be the most helpful. He still chews but now has something to chew on. Our favorite brands are ARK and Chewigem. Now that he's older his chew and bite is much stronger and Chewigem can take it. Hope this helps...good luck!

Look into something that will be safe for him to chew on instead and when you catch him chewing on a no-no thing like a cord or change take it away from him and hand him the safe thing for him to chew on. I mean it might sound silly but he obviously is fixated in chewing on things..so hand him something silly that he can safely chew on and it might help him not want to chew on the cords and other dangerous things. I hope you find something that helps

I feel your pain. My son started doing it recently he’s 11. Can’t count how many charger cables and things we’ve gone thru. He’s also cheered the cord on his desk fan that he has on this bed for night time and it’s so bad it’s quit working. I figured if I got him the cord that have the braiding on the outside it wouldn’t get chewed, I thought wrong.
