Guanfacine For 11 Yr Old Boy Starting Puberty?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Yesterday I took my son(autistic, processing delay issues, & speech delays) to the pediatrician for his 11 year old check up. Doctor said he is starting puberty. I expressed my concerns with him because when he doesn't get his way/what he wants, he goes from 0-1000 in a split second. When this 1st started to happen he would hit walls, kick walls & slam doors. Now hes added hitting me (& brother who's 10), pulling hair, yelling, and walking outside. Doctor suggested putting him on a very low dose… read more

Thank You all for commenting on my post, I really appreciate it!! We are in the process of getting the needed observation & evaluation for ABA therapy. If anyone has other ideas please comment, I am willing to try anything ans everything.

I was going to recommend ABA therapy also. My son went for the same behaviors you described above. The therapy got him to use his words instead of resort to hitting and kicking. Good luck!

Puberty has been really rough for us!! My daughter took Guanfacine in the past, and it didn't seem to work for her. She has taken Abilifyfor a year, and it seems to work better ...or at least it was. They just had to increase the dosage again. Things have been a bit rough lately. None of the meds. my daughter has tried seemed to make her tired, or like a zombie. Has your son ever received ABA therapy? That could help too. I mean, it's not a miracle solution even if you find a good therapist ...but it can help.

I gave my son guanfacine when he was 10 -didn't work - needed much stronger medications - it was hard to make that decision -but quanfacine did nothing. By 13 -we had a much better regiment

I had a friend with a social work degree and an experienced counselor. She told me she puts her boys with special needs on depo prevera during this time. She claims it has really helped. But of course it will require a physicians consent.
