Genetic Testing

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Dallas, TX

My son's new pediatrician suggested we get genetic testing on my son. His previous pediatrician also suggested it when he was diagnosed but we didn't want to do it because we didn't see the testing changing the outcome. Will doing the testing help with his autism or is it not worth it?

Yes, you have a really good Pediatric physician if he is referring you to genetic testing. This is the rundown we got, when we went to a service we have called children with special health care needs, They made the recommendations, neurologist first, he then he referred us to geneticist and a choice of a couple of psychiatrists that are equipped to help with our special needs. It is necessary to have a diagnosis of Autism to get services that your child may very well need if not now down the road. if not now. I would definitely recommend it. Also they can test for fragile X because it could be important if you are dealing with Retardation and Autism.

Back in 2008 the University of Utah did genetic testing on all six of our children. We thought it would be a good idea as they were doing a nationwide study at the time and we could hopefully offer some additional insight. Everyone, including my wife and myself, were also given intelligence tests. On the genetic side we have still not heard one word. I'm guessing they just took our information and filed it away someplace for reference. On the intelligence side we were told the children were smart just autistic, no retardation at all. My wife and I were told we were of above average intelligence. Bottom line it was a lot of hassle for hardly any gain. My suggestion: don't bother unless they're paying you.

We have our son scheduled for genetic testing in a few weeks. Our pediatrician suggested it for case studies and the possibility if it was associated with another disease. Than we would be able to possibly treat the other disease with medication .

I had genetics testing done on my son. Nothing came back abnormal, but I would definitely recommend getting it done. I went through the process of eliminating all possible causes I could. He saw a geneticist, a neurologist, a gastroenterologist, an audiologist. When he got his MRI, they found a Chiari malformation that might have gone undetected if I hadn't had the battery of tests done. TEST FOR EVERYTHING.

I agree the testing is not likely to give you much in the way of answers or affect how you need to address your child's issues. We did it and it cost a lot of money and really did nothing for us.
