Teeth Grinding When Hugging

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son does this thing where he grinds his teeth when he hugs you. That is really the only time he does it. He is the on initiating the hug so it can't be nervousness or being uncomfortable. He will say "I love you mama" and come sit on my lap and hug me. All I hear is this awful teeth grinding. I tell him he might break his teeth if he keeps doing it but I don't think he can control it. He had a dentist appointment a few months ago and they saw nothing wrong with his teeth do I know he is not… read more

It probably is partly excitement and a reaction to the stimulation from that. I, too, have a son who periodically grinds his teeth although it seems to have increased the past few months and the previous posts suggested B5 supplements or zinc. We’ve used magnesium glycinate in the past and this can help too (magnesium is calming). It was less of a concern when his babyteeth were still in but now that his adult teeth are in, I’m going to try the B5 and see if this decreases it.

Wow. Two days of B5 and so far no teeth grinding. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Hi there, i know this is an old post, hopefully you can reply. I have a 21 month old who is currently non verbal, and does this exact thing. He has not been diagnosed with anything. I am in the process of having him checked out by our health visitor here in the UK. He grinds his teeth when he hugs me whilst shaking his teeth. He seems very excited. And digs into my neck when he does it and sometimes goes for a bite. Sometimes he uses his hands to pinch me. He also wiggles his hands and fingers. But other than that he doesnt have all the other signs of autism. He doesnt need a routinen does not stack or line toys up, does not play with numbers, does not stiffen up, learn to walk on time, he does give me eye contact sometimes when i call him. When i play with him he does respond and play back. He feeds himself with his hands and fork. He will pass me something if i ask for it. Does this sound familiar to you childs previous behaviour?

Zinc is supposed to help as well and we do supplement this. I would try both.
