How Do Get An Asd (asperger) Do Homework Without A Fight? My Son Is 9 Going Into 4th Grade.
My son was never diagnosed with Aspergers, but I suspect it now that both his children have been diagnosed with ASD.
I recall 9 years old being a really tough age for getting homework done. If it helps any, I think its a tough time whether or not autism is part of the picture.
I worked in public schools for 20 years. There is a huge change in what is expected of children during this age. And a physical growth spirt is common then too, which can temporarily impact their ability in other areas.
When my son was nine, I had him do homework at the same time and in the same place each week day...the kitchen table after our evening meal. (Always striving to first give him physically active play time after school, some quiet alone time, and then a good meal ). I sat at the kitchen table with my son if he was struggling and when he wasnt, I stayed busy with other chores in the room so he could still see me and know that I was right there supporting him. Some days, he’d lay his head down and cry because certain assignments were nearly impossible for him to do. ie. The teacher assigned a word search that included the names of every state capital. My son read at an adult level but could not spell to save his life, so a word search was impossible for him.I asked the teacher if she’d be willing to give him a blank map along with a list of the cities, and have him write the name of each city where it belonged on the map. (That was an easy exercise for my son. He knew every state and capital and exactly where each one was located. He just couldnt spell). I explained to her that my son cried after 3 hours of trying to do a word search that she thought should have taken 20 minutes at the most. (Personally, I didnt see the value in doing a word search. It seemed like “busy work” to me. She had assigned it during the day while she was busy with other things, like grading papers, and the rule was that whatever a student didnt finish during class time had to be done as homework).
Luckily she agreed to my suggestion. He was sooo happy to get an assignment that he was capable of doing. He was proud of his work. My son is 44 now, so ASD wasnt even heard of in our world back then. I hope that today teachers are willing to adjust assignments to fit the students’ needs. (I knew my son much better than she did. It broke my heart to see him try so hard and be so disappointed in himself. He really did like that I stayed in the room with him so I could help whenever he wanted help, but not hover over him). Having physical activity after school was very helpful, and the same bedtime ritual every night helped too.
Thank u, i will try The sticker idea And my 9 year old likes legos.
I try for him to have a snack And decompress after School And start 30 mins of Work before dinner with a 5 min break.. I even try if he does good all week, we give him a prize at The end of The week.
