Apply for SSI supplemental security income. Many get these two confused the process is probably similar to what's described above. SSID. And SSDI are two different things. While anyone with a disability can get SSID generally you have to have worked to qualify for SSDI

Yes absolutely he can, you are going to have to get all of your documentation ready. Any test, evaluation, and diagnosis from every Dr or the school system is a must. Remember that this is federal and not state so do not let anyone tell you otherwise, because the state has nothing to do with it. You have to call the social security office and they are going to set up an appointment where they will call you. They are also going to want proof of all of your income because the amount you get is dependent on it. You are going to have to send this all to them ahead of time so they can go over it.

At 17you are still dealing with a minor but past that you are dealing wit an adult, and that brings complications. The younger the child the easier it is, so you may need a lawyer but I would try without one first. I did not need one but I got SSI for my kids when they were 5, and 4 respectively.

Supplemental Security Income (for disabilities) is different from SocialSecurity Disability Income. Your SSID case worker can explain it when you make the appointment. SSDI typically goes to older individuals who have worked but have since been diagnosed with X disability and therefore cannot work or earn a reasonable income. SSID is for anyone who has X diagnosis.
