Services/Schools In North Atlanta
We are moving to North Atlanta area this June and we are trying to figure out which county would be best for our son. He is 5 years old and will be starting 1st grade this fall(2013). We are currently located in Greensboro,NC where he was diagnosed with High-functioning autism a couple of years ago. He is in an inclusion program here. So he is a part of a regular classroom with 18 kids of which two have special needs. There is one trained aide within the classroom for the two special needs… read more
@A MyAutismTeam Member Hi, we are looking into a move to Sandy Bridge area as well (anything within 20 min drive would be good for us). we have a 5 years old kid wiht high functioning ASD who is supposed to start Kindergarten in September. Was wondering if you are still in Atlanta and how do you like the place? Did you find good services/schools? Would appreciate any info.
I don't have much information on the sensory part. We are going to go with what we have now and make changes once we are there and learn more information about the schools.
Good stuff! Sat here for hours tonight looking for elementary schools with sensory rooms because I figured that would be a sign of good resources in a school. Only found Chalker Elementary in Kennesaw. Also heard from a mom with 2 on the spectrum that those same high schools are good. Was looking around there too. Wish I could figure out how to get a list of schools with sensory rooms.
East cobb seems to fit our needs but we are looking for a rental property and so far it has not been easy. We found one near East Valley Elementary but I have no feedback on that school yet. Do you know anything about it?
I heard from a parent that Addison elementary has a good special Ed program, might be something you want to explore. Also, I was told all elementary schools feeding into Walton, Pope, Lassiter High school clusters in East Cobb are good. I spoke to a mom in Fulton county whose kid is autistic and in a gifted program. I am not sure about Cobb county, though.
I have been calling lots of people and I still don't have answers. We especially need a gifted program. My twins are testing in 6th grade for reading coming out of kindergarten. I am just praying for the right school with a balance for them in special Ed needs and gifted needs.
