CHOP has a long waiting list to get a child diagnosed, so frustrating. Where else can I go?

Just have your doc set you up a psych evaluation

You do not want a school evaluation because often they will just try to get away with the least amount possible. Sorrry to be negative but this has been my experience, and the experiences of countless families I have talked to.

Everything does take a long time and I know it is hard, I have two ASD children trust me I know, but you have to wait for appointments to get the job done. Most people will tell you none of this is easy and you have to go find things and get them on your own because no one else will do it for you.

I can tell you I am here five years later after the correct diagnosis and my children pretty much get everything they need and the state pays for just about all of it with a few minor exceptions. It took a lot of fighting and an advocate but we got what we needed.

I cannot believe that CHOP has a 1 year waiting list! The other children's hospital has a 8 to 10 months waiting list. I cannot afford a $4000 to $5000 evaluation from a private practice that does not deal with insurance. Another thing is that I have to apply for medical assistance in order to receive services that he needs. I did request an evaluation from the school, still waiting for the consent forms though. If the statistic is truth about 1 in 80 children will be affected by autism, we need more doctors and medical centers that we can go for evaluation and treatment.

you may still have to wait but a neurologist is the way to go. This way you are going to get an accurate diagnosis that you may not get from a less experienced Dr. I see way to many children get diagnosed with PDD-NOS because the Dr either does not want to or does not know better than to say it is ASD.

Getting the diagnosis of PDD-NOS is going to leave you with far less services so you want to get the correct one.
