Does Anyone's Kiddo Went From Early Childhood Special Education To Regular School System?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is currently in what they call Early Childhood Special Education Program at our local Elementary School. I'll like to believe he will eventually transition to the regular school system program but I'm curious to hear if this similar situation may have happen with any of your kids. In other words, is it something possible to transition from special education program to regular one?

Anything is possible! I will say that my child is higher functioning on the spectrum. My son just transitioned from about 1.5yrs of special ed preschool to mainstream kindergarten. I was very fortunate that he had a great preschool teacher to arranged for my son to visit the 'typical' preschool class a couple times each week, and then the kindergarten on campus to test how he'd do in a larger class and with typical peers. That gave everyone a good idea of how he'd do with the transition. Also, the summer before he transitioned to mainstream class, I had my son involved at the YMCA. This gave him more exposure to peers and noise. Our current school is great, and I am very thankful for the level of care he is receiving. He gets speech, OT, and adaptive PE. My son is holding his own with the curriculum and reads at grade 1.5! I've had a good relationship with both schools, and everyone has worked as a team. I was concerned with the transition at first, but realized it would be better to let him try then always wonder if he 'could have'. Good luck!

YES!! My son did this. We was in a special education preschool program, it was a blended program so he was mixed with other 'typically developing' children. But he spent 2 and a half years in that program, and now is in a regular kindergarten.
Also I teach in a Early Childhood Sp Ed program, and we send many children in to a regular education classroom. Our school district is starting an autism classroom that's goal is to help transition students with autism into the regular education classroom (the goal is to do so by 2nd grade), of course the children in this program would typically be not cognitively delayed and are verbal.

Yes our Son was in early childhood special Ed in Northfield Il and transitioned with an aide to Kindergarten. We dropped the aide in 1 st grade and he went to the public school successfully until 4 th grade when transitioning classrooms and lockers came Into play and he couldn't wander when overwhelmed. He attended special Ed from 4 th to 6 th grade and transitioned back in 7 th grade
