How Do I Get My 5 Yr Old To Go To Sleep With Out Me?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 5 year old daughter just started Kindergarden a few months ago and was diagnosed just two weeks ago. I am really trying hard to get her on a more regular schdule but I am having trouble. Not only does she act as if she is no where near tired but she will not go to sleep with out me unless she is completely exhausted. I really dont like to give children medication but if that is the only recourse then I will. I feel like such a bad parent allowing her to stay up until I am ready to go to bed… read more

We swear by melatonin. Give it to her 30 minutes before bedtime (it even comes in liquid!) just give it to her in a drink of juice. Do your bedtime routine (could be juice, jammies, brush teeth, read a story) and within 30 minutes of taking it she should be ready for bed. Just make sure that she is in her own bed when you tuck her in and read her a story :) Good luck!

we use a routine that starts with a warm bath then involves either 45 minutes of classical music, or a soothing movie in bed; ours is Ponyo (nice soothing music). I have to lay there in the bed until he gets sleepy, I try and sneak out earlier and earlier, it's getting better. It used to take hours and I would fall asleep too. He is 4, very rarely will he put himself to sleep. As an escape routine, I say I had to go to the bathroom and not come back, or say I would be right back and just go about my own business. But "music or mommy" is still the way we are going with this. Hopefully one day it can evolve into just the music and a kiss goodnight. When I am not calm it does not work at all. Get your own body and mind calm it will go faster.

I talked to my doctor. you i belevie said you had your childnre diagnosted so there for you have a doctor who is helping you in what each child needs to be healthy an happy ,able to function in normal day life. My son use to be like a motor he would sleep but it took such a long time for him to fall alseep i woukld be so tired an then he wouldnt sleep very long at all an i would still be tired an i wasnt getting enough sleep. I talked to doctor its not only important for us parents to get enough sleep but also for the children. its important for everyones moods an mind..our over all health . so there are nite time meds doctors gave me for son to help him sleep an when he was able to sleep deeper an sounder sleep he was also happier an think clear, less irrtable (him an I both when we got right amount of sleep).
Also when my boys were smaller before they were on meds i had my boys sleep with me in my bed.i see nothing wrong with that. But in the nite i started waking up an carring them into their own beds so they would wake up in their own rooms. then when i felt they should be in their rooms all nite..i would go in their room an lay on their beds read to them talk with them ..an lay sleep nap beside them until they feel alseep then i would get up go back to my own room before morning. And thats how i did that transition. My boys are young adults now..so they are big guys. Out of the three of us (myself an my two boys) in our house hold i am the one with the smallest bed. i only have a single bed..though event as young men once or twice over last few years i have had both boys at least once walk in an lay beside me in my tiny little bed. of course they dont really sleep they just i guess want to be beside me or clsoe i suppose. its all good i want my boys to feel close to me always.and forever. I would make a visual bedtime routine schedule and post it in her bedroom. My daughter is ADHD and has a hard time calming before bedtime. We started her with a visual schedule, then a written one, now she will tell me her routine. Just establish a routine, stick with it. At first she may fight it, but once she learns what the routine is she'll be okay. Good luck!

We use melatonin every night in my house as well. My son takes forever to go to sleep without it.
