5yr Old Boy With ASD. We Make Just Too Much To For Medicaid Programs, But Too Poor To Pay For The Amount Of Therapy He Needs. Options?

His school provides bare minimum with therapy. Our kids (only) were once on Medicaid and it seemed to provide pretty decent therapy throughout the week, however, with a pay bump at my job, and my wife now going back to work, we are just over the threshold for Medicaid. Private therapy is something that I know is worth it but again cannot simply afford it. Meanwhile our son has gone on 25min tangents in his classroom to the point where the teachers are growing intolerant. What are options for us… read more

I was surprised but my employer’s medical insurance covered speech and OT therapy (after the deductible, and with a copay).

If you live in California, visit the Regional Center to see if he qualifies for a long-term care Medical program + IHSS. Ask your Regional Center to tell you more about long-term care Medical Program

I am learning about medicaid waivers which are provided in each state, and provide many useful supports throughout a child & adult’s life. Everyone should apply as early as possible apparently (these are not dependent on parental income or assets) because there are waitlists, but the more urgent your need the quicker the waitlist is for your family or adult. This is a training from an org in my state: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22BrSd9BtpM. I got this by asking my kids’ local school system’s school psychologist to send me pertinent therapy and programs info for ASD. Even if your kid is not in that school I believe the local school psych is obligated to share this info upon request - worth a polite request to your local public school. 💜

I too am having this problem. My son had all the therapy available to him with no charges or copay needed by me but once my pay went up so did Medicaid the following year. It's disheartening!
