Ask him what he needs. My son loves to mess up my room, not necessarily breaking stuff, but taking things apart. A parent coach suggested that I ask him that question, and his answer was that he wanted to play. So, I set the standards of what's okay and what's not okay and rewarded him for it. I hope this helps.
