School Issues.....

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
TX

Has anyone ever filed a complaint with their state's board of education because the district did not resolve the issue? My issue is my son's school has not had a speech therapist on staff all year. I found out the one from last year is still in the district but in a different position...... Did the issue get resolved after this? Was your child treated differently at school after and during complaint process?

We got a lawyer and went through the process to get compensatory education for my son and we managed to get quite a bit which is good also, for the first time I used an advocate ( same lawyer person) for the IEP, and I found that helped a lot and getting him the things he needed. (The whole process was online online and they’re definitely not very polite to each other. It’s a moderator kind of thing the person keeps jumping back-and-forth between trying to have us come to an agreement, but there was no difference in the way anyone treated me after that even though it all seemed a bit angry and I guess it’s because they do them ALL the time the teachers, the assistant principal they constantly doing iEP and most people bring advocates (which I didn’t know! and by nature a contentious process because it’s the only process there is. So there’s a lot of demanding times and scoffing and eye rolling but they’re all used to it. it seemed a little unkind to me, but they expect it is so it’s fine. . I think I was always afraid to be ‘difficult’ because I’m generally of people pleaser, but my son isn’t getting what he needs and no one‘s gonna get it for him, but me so I’ve basically had to learn how to be a little bit more demanding, and I find having someone else speak for me is helpful.

The best thing that I've had success with in these events was to try and be 'Helpful' at getting the situation addressed showing the concern that I thought the Program ('Speech Therapy') was helping my child and that I'd like to have it resumed as quickly as possible.

The beginning of the last school year my son was in kindergarten and improperly placed for the 1st 9 weeks. It broke my heart. Nonverbal communication is something I worry about every minute of every day
