My 6 Year Old Autistic Son Is In An Ordinary Mainstream School And They Want Him To Go Into Year One And He’s Just Being Left To Do His Own
Thank you for all your help. I reached out to the principle in regards to it, as my son has already has 3 accidents at school (number 2) because public bathrooms are so hard for him and he holds it until he cant. He needs to use the nurses bathroom in order to go, and I feel like it should be in writing for him.
Tiffani-I’m sorry, I just read your story now..-Autism is one of the disability’s that qualifies a child for an iep. Read the Individuals with disability act & NJ state law. Then request, in writing, to the school that you’re requesting evaluations be done. He already qualifies so the evaluations are a formality. When the evaluations are done, you’ll have a CSE meeting to discuss the results & create the iep. You are a member of the CSE team & need to attend it, for your son’s sake. Fight for whatever you think he needs..ex: speech, ot etc.
There’s also another section in the iep called accommodations/modifications.
That’s where they can write things that would help him through his day, ex: a 5 min warning before recess is over, a visual schedule in the morning etc. I’ve been to many meetings & trust me they will run you over if you let them. I’m in NY but I don’t think the process is different for NJ, maybe some minor differences with the process.... Fight for what he needs & what you feel will make his day more successful! Hope this helps:)
Definitely! Also a letter from his pediatrician, therapist etc. stating his needs will help get accommodations into the iep.
I will warn you though that we have experienced the special ed teachers & staff not following the accommodations in our daughters iep. It’s a long soap opera of a story but schools sometimes have a reputation of this. You have to stay on top of them, it’s hard because you’re not there to make sure they’re following it. For the bathroom I’m sure you’ll know because the accidents will stop. If you find that they’re not following the iep then you request a cse meeting to address it. They have to arrange one, by law, if the parent requests it. Hopefully everything’s goes well:)
Oh I didn’t realize it was illegal, I will have to figure out what is going on
Rachael-that’s good you’re going to change schools. We had a similar experience. The school wasn’t doing what they should & they were just keeping her quiet for the day, not even teaching her, it was pathetic.
If he’s still there or it’s going to take a while to change schools, fight them on what they should be doing. Does he have an iep or a document similar in England?
