Have You Moved To Another City Or State To Better Care For Your Child?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Birmingham, AL

Has anyone here made the decision to relocate for the sake of their child? Whether it be for a better school system, state insurance policies, intervention services, or to be near a better support system (family, friends)?

Yes, we moved twice. We moved from Georgia because ABA therapy wasn't covered by insurance- any insurance we could buy. We then moved to Texas which was a step and our daughter had insurance for ABA. We moved because my job had a lot of unpaid overtime and my wife kept -itching to me about it.

Now we are in Massachusetts which should be one of the best states in terms of insurance mandates covering ABA therapy and other benefits. We just got here so I can't confirm that it's better. We don't have or friends around here but that can be important for some families.

I can't think of another health issue that forces so many people to pack their bags and move. I read somewhere it's cheaper to treat heart patients than to treat a kid with autism. When we lived in Georgia I remember someone online telling me that I should be lobbying the state government to change the law. Yeah right, my wife and I both worked and we have two small kids. We didn't the free time, the money or the influence to changes things. I learned later that only four families dealing with ASD showed up for a rally in Atlanta at the capitol- pitiful. It's easier to just move than wait for things to happen. Everyone agrees that early intervention is best because it's easier to mold kid's mind as they grow.

Have to say, not much here in Savannah for integrative medicine and no biomedicine here.

Wow. This is like listening to my life. All my husband and I talk about is his trying to find work somewhere else to get out of Georgia. I read on Autism Speaks that mare than 75% of people are unhappy because there are no resources near them. My son cannot stand long drives so driving for hours is out of the question. Finding help here is a nightmare and I applaud anyone who is able to relocated for better services. Every single day we talk about moving and if there's a job my husband could apply for. We moved from California before his diagnosis to Georgia which was the worst decision of our lives.

Yes, I moved recently to find more opportunities for my child. It was the best decision I ever made. He now receives more therapy than he has had in the past two years and is improving.
