Do Any Of Your School Aged ASD Children Record Their Class With A Digital Or Tape Recorder?
My son has high functioning ASD. He's going into 6th grade. He struggles with communication and when he comes home and I try to help him with homework when he needs help, ask him more details about what was said in class, or ask him details on an assignment, he is unable to do that. He has an IEP and will be going into middle school, but he doesn't have written into his plan - permission to record his class (the way college students do to remember details of a lecture). I talked to my husband… read more
I don't know what the BOE rules are as far as recording at school but I do know that you can have placed in your IEP that the teachers give him copies of the notes for the day. We have that in our sons IEP. We also have in his IEP no homework b/c when he comes home from school, school is done and he will not do it. Instead he has a class at school where he works on work that he didn't complete or needs extra help with. It has been a win-win for everyone b/c he is completing the work and plus they know what assignments are missing etc. Maybe your son can have something written like that in his IEP where he gets one on one assistance while the class is working on something else that won't effect his grades, like don't pull him during math or reading, but maybe when the teacher is doing busy work.
Yea. I think you are battling a losing battle on getting it recorded. We use to record when the consultant came to train staff in the school. But it was discontinued due to liability and permissions with the other students. However, you could implement a system where the teacher has to email or send a list home every day. And if it's not written down, then your son can not be held accountable for that assignment.
There may be legal reasons why yiu could not video record in school. Even if you can you cannot post anything anywhere because you do not have permission to have anyone else on the video, like other students. Not sure if schools are held to the same standard as medical standards but there yiu can't do it without permission.
