SSI

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm considering leaving my full time job to be able to focus on my daughters needs and possibly home school
I haven't tried applying for SSI or IHS because since my husband and I both currently work I'm afraid we will not qualify until I quit and our income drops dramatically. Can anyone share?

I know it will most likely vary from case to case but I'm wondering how much we can expect to receive if we qualify. We are trying to budget to see if we'd be able to make it financially if I do… read more

Sorry I'm late to reply.

I had SSI for a year for my son. We're in California. I still worked and I was receiving child support from his dad. I had to turn in copies of my pay stubs and child support checks every month, my son's savings account could never go over $1,500 and if I had any life insurance policy over $2,000, it would terminate his funding.

We moved to a new county and I'm considering re-applying. I'm just worried about how my new paychecks, which are $500 more per month than what I was making before, will affect it.

Fill out an application for your child to qualify for In Home Supportive Services (IHSS). You can probably find one on the California government website. If you can't find it there, call your local social services office and ask how to get one. Someone will come out to your house and ask you questions about your child. If they qualify, you can become their care provider through IHSS and get paid. This is available only in California, so that parents who want to take care of their children but can't afford to leave their job can do it. You will need to get certified as a Provider...easy, with just a few simple steps, including watching a video and getting finger-printed with a background check (one time only), and getting trained on how to do the paycards. The state pays IHSS providers different wages based on your county. You can ask social services what the hourly rate for IHSS Providers is for your county. It's usually somewhere around $10/hr. And if your child qualifies, they will qualify for a certain amount of hours. Wait to see if they qualify before you quit your job. Hope this helps!

I would try IHSS you would be working through them to take care of your daughter. My son however doesn't qualify for IHSS- They told me to come back to them when he is 18- however he has a good level of functioning so I think he will get denied again.

As far as SS-They will take whomever is working income into consideration. It never hurts to try and see.

This is my fear also. My husband job is ending in June but I make 85 and I feel with the 4 of us they will deny me also. I still may apply in July when his job is up but not sure if we will get it. I have all paper work with diagnosis etc.

We qualify for SSI with verbal Autism. It depends on the state. My husband makes 26000 a year and I homeschool the kids.
