Eat Food Off The Ground

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mesa, AZ

My daughter can be ANY where eating ANYTHING drop it on the floor or ground and pick it up and eat it. I have caught her eating food that she didn't drop also. I have told her a million times not to eat food dropped and about germs and how she could get sick. Doesn't stop her; she just tries to hide the fact that she just ate food that she dropped on the floor or ground. Does anyone else's kid do this and how do you deal with it?

Members connected over the challenging and sometimes unsanitary habit of children picking up and eating food off floors and ground, with one parent sharing that their six-and-a-half-year-old daughter does this impulsively despite repeated warnings about germs. Several members suggested practical redirecting tools like chew necklaces from Amazon to address possible oral sensory needs, emphasizing that consistent repetition and redirecting to appropriate chewing options can help reduce floor-eating behaviors over time. A recurring theme was the shared frustration of frequent illnesses and school absences, with members offering empathy and creative solutions like one parent who temporarily removed underwear privileges to stop food-hoarding behavior, reminding others that persistence and humor can help navigate these exhausting parenting challenges.

If it makes you feel any better.....My twins used to hide food in their UNDERWEAR .....And then sneak it in their room and eat it.....Drove me INSANE.....So.....I told them....Guess what? No more underwear. We did this like 4-5 times until it sunk in (taking their underwear away for a few days here & there and it drove them nuts not wearing them ....Here's your pants.....Or pj bottoms.....No undies.....Arghhhhhhh

well if she has a oral issue yes she would have something to chew on and the less likely to pick food off the floor, just tell her to chew her necklace instead.its a lot of repetition you will have to teach her to stop taking food of the floor and redirect her to chew on her necklace instead
