How Well Do Nonverbal Children Do In A Mainstream Classroom?
My son starts pre-k next week and I'm worried about how he will do in a mainstream classroom. He was suppose to start last year but I couldn't bring myself to send him. So I sent him to theraphy instead of school and it didn't help much, he still is still nonverbal. So this year I'm sending him to Pre-k which isn't mandatory here but the teachers and the doctors say it will help him to develop better social skills. I'm trying to do what's best for him but with him being nonverbal I don't… read more
Trust your education partners (they're part of your team now) -- be as connected to them as they'll allow and make sure that they know they have your trust and appreciation. That will help them to keep you in the loop with struggles and successes. You're the expert regarding your son and they're the experts regarding educating lots of different types of children. Together, it will hopefully be an awesome partnership. :)
I do understand how you feel when it comes to your child intergrating with other children socially when he is nonverbal at the time. My son has a limited vocabulary and I feel at times anxiety and stressed about him going to school. He has gotten better socially but I constantly check up on him in school and constantly ask questions. I know I probably irritate his teacher at times but as long as I feel better and my child is safe and happy that is all that matters. I say give it a try. If your son doesn't like it or if you have problems with the school staff, you can try another school where they will have him in a classroom with peers of his age and similarities. I hope he has great school year and everything works out.
My son is four and still not speaking he babbles a lot thats all and I am about to get started to send him to school also. I am scared too but the teachers in the special ed class room should be trained to assist him and watch him communicate to him on his level.
I'm not sure about preschool but we had a very negative experience with my nonverbal son attending special Ed kindergarten in the public school. I am speaking of my own experience here as I truly believe my local
School district is just horrible. I found the staff could not support his needs because they lacked a full understanding of autism. They did not understand sensory issues and why he could not focus. He was treated very differently compared to the other kids. Thankfully, he is starting a new private school in September that is trained on working with kids who have special needs.
With preschool it might be ok because of the social aspect of it but when we sent my nonverbal daughter she was in a special needs preschool. All you can do is try and if things are not working out you can pull him out. I think you will know pretty quickly.
