Symptoms More Pronounced When Sick

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone ever noticed that their child's symptoms get worse when they are coming down with an infection of any kind. Viral, bacterial ( like strep), flu, etc.? Our son tends to become more hyper with milder illnesses. He also struggles more with expressive/receptive language than usual when he has a fever. I'm just wondering if anyone has these similar experiences and if they have any information about it.

Look at the PANDAS physician's network. There is an auto-immune disorder that can be caused by bacterial and other infections. This disorder can cause a multitude of symptoms including many that mirror ASD. My son was diagnosed with this after years of strep and upper respiratory infections and I noticed a pattern of his behavior improving drastically while on antibiotics used to treat whatever infection he had. He is still Autistic but has greatly improved with treatment for the auto-immune disorder.

Yes. Absolutely. I always know when my son is getting sick...because of his mood changes.

Yes!! In fact, I get nervous whenever our son becomes even more hyper than usual (for no apparent reason). I have always wondered if this is linked to his Autism. He's 4 now, but since he was about 2, his behavior changes drastically a day or two before he comes down with a fever.

I wish I could tell you we've had a medical confirmation (or even anyone else who believes us :-) ), but nothing so far.

But absolutely it happens for him. Excessive hyperactivity + a change in sleeping habits (waking around 4 or 5 in the morning) two days in a row almost always means an illness and /or fever.

Some research I've done over the years, that the brain gets inflammation. I've notice this too.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, how do you go about testing for PANDAS? We have had recurrent strep. But I think we have eradicated it now. Its hard for me to tell if this is something I should request from my doctor to look into or not. I would like to test for auto immune diseases though.
