My Son Was Recently Diagnosed With ASD. What Do I Do Now?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Waterford, MI

My 9 year old son was officially diagnosed with ASD last week after MANY tests by specialists at his school. I was made aware of this at his IEP. I understand the changes that will be made in regards to the help he will get at school, but I am totally lost on what I should do next, what I can/should do to help at home, how to get him any extra assistance. I have had my concerns for a long time, but now that the diagnoses is in black and white, I'm feeling extremely overwhelmed, lost and just sad… read more

Look on the Autism Speaks website and request a "First 100 days toolkit". This kit includes so much great information for the first 100 days after diagnosis, where to go, things to do, etc.

Thank you both so much! I cannot begin to explain how much better it makes me feel just knowing there are people going through/have gone through all this and that its not the end of the world. I have been trying to do research and it all just seems so overwhelming. I really need to learn to take baby steps and day by day. I just want to fix everything for him so he doesn't have to struggle.

Don't blow your money in a panic like we did. We didn't know how much the speech and occupational therapy were but the experts stress early intervention so paid before getting covered by insurance. It the first time in my life that I was broke (no disposable income) and it happened within 3 months. We did get reimbursed because it was within 90 days but some parents either have lot of money or are covered by Medicaid. Check out https://www.autismspeaks.org/resource-guide/sta....
