ATTENTION FLORIDIANS: We Are Looking To Move To Florida And I'm Needing School Recommendations...
ATTENTION FLORIDIANS: We are looking to move to Florida so that I may continue my education. The schools I am looking at are in Fort Myers, Panama City and Naples. I need to know how the schools are there for my kiddo. He has high functioning autism/Asperger's and ADHD. He has been in a high functioning autism classroom for the last 3 years. Wehn we move he will be starting 7th grade. I would love any suggestions on school districts, cities, etc. you may have. Thanks in advance!!
Greatschools.org is a nice website....does not segregate by special needs but you can google autism schools in your area then cross reference
I left Florida and I lived in that area but to be honest the schools are the same throughout the state. They have ASD classrooms but they are mixed. The older teachers are basically special ED teachers with a few extra classes for certification. We had all kinds of issues because they could not handle behaviors. Some of the young teachers are good because they learned in school but the programs themselves are not.
We had doctors tell us that they are 20 years behind the northern states in schooling and medical care for ASD. We had to drive from FT Myers to St Pete for good doctors and specialists.
Also on top of that the state pays nothing for services so you have to go with the McKY grant and it will not cover it all. There is a place called Eden in Naples that is good but what the grant foes not pay is going to cost you thousands a year to go there.
