I worked for Kindercare (they were instrumental in getting my son diagnosed).....and while they were good with him, he was booted out b'cuz we could not get him a one-on-one aide. Since it is NOT school; they have no obligation to provide one. That is something that would come out of pocket for you.
I'm not trying to be negative, just informative of what I went through. :)
@A MyAutismTeam Member...thank you so much..we do have kinder care near by..we will look into it for sure..
My son started daycare at 2. He was in Early Intervention starting at 2 also. We switched to a different daycare (KinderCare) at 2.5 and he seemed to do better there (nicer kids and teachers with more education). He is verbal now (mild autism diagnosis)and I think daycare helped with this. I also think he learned how to play with other children at daycare. He is now in disabled preschool and gets bussed to daycare afterwards (He just turned 3). There are 3 other boys in the daycare that also have special needs.
Check out KinderCare if they have one in your area and see if they are familiar with any special needs kids.
Our ASD daughter was in daycare before her autism showed up. They her left in the 2 year-old class as long possible because she couldn't be potty trained. She is now in the 3 year-old class and it looks like she's pretty much ignored most of the day because the only autistic kid in the daycare so the teacher's did some research but she really tries their patience. I saw one teacher/grandmother (she has a grandaugther in the class) yelling at my kid. The teacher was embarassed but I told her she's used to it at home. She will say "I don't like that house (the daycare)" so she doesn't like it but can't explain why so I'm guessing. I've never seen her play with other kids at the school but at least she interacts with her little brother. The daycare is ok but my kid needs to be somewhere else as she's not getting much of out of daycare and all of the talk about early intervention means she's wasting time there and gets limited help in a preintervention class and 30 minutes of ST/wk.
I agree. Find a place that has experience with ASD. Also other children like your son. I had my son in a daycare when he was 2 before we knew anything was wrong and it did not go well. Once we knew he was delayed and required special ed preschool we also had to put him in a new daycare ctr. One with experienced staff and willing to follow his IEP as well. It was the best decision we could've made at that time!
