whatever you do put it in an IEP (Individual Education Program), this is a federally funded program. DO NOT let them talk you into a 504 form (not federally funded, carries no wait with school, only state funded)
We moved to the rural part of our town with a different school district here in Il.Our new school district is able to fund my daughters busing both ways(really other school would only do one way) more therapy times, iPad and computerized learning, and ESY this summer. She is in a class of 6 with 1 teacher and 2 parapros. They also have an all day KDG program so we are very excited. So look around, you may not have to go far.school rating websites and autism speaks had an article about best school districts for special needs as well
He should be on an (IEP) individualized education plan that specifies ABA as part of his school therapy and his current (private, not associated with school system) ABA therapist should be providing services outside of school. Legally they can't kick him out if you have dotted your I's and crossed your T's with regard to his needs and behavioral issues. It is up to the school system (and you fighting the fight)to provide him with the most appropriate educational setting..... meaning if he needs ABA or a 1:1. B. Concept development is really important prior to Kindergarten. Most preK programs are capable of this whether public or daycare however, I would say that you might want to initiate the public school program a year before Kindergarten just to work out the kinks in the system and get him acclimated. You don't know if the transition will be smooth, and there is no criteria for passing preschool but there is for Kindergarten...... in other words, you don't want him struggling in K getting adjusted. Just a Mom's opinion!! We are from MA so not sure if your schools system is different.
The top two states In the country are NJ and MA but most of the northern states are good. Never go to a state without tax because you will be in the same boat. You can still find places that are not expensive but they are going to be more rural areas, plus we have found the small towns are better anyway because there are less children and you will not get lost in the system. The other thing to consider is the job market so look into that as well.
We went to MA because we were originally from here and we get pretty much what we need with the combination of SSI and MassHealth which is our state Medicaid. They tend to cover more that the other states Medicaid because it is mandated you have insurance here. The school is responsible to pay ABA even going to your home if they cannot provide enough during the school day.
They did that for our daughter 3hrs a day five days a week until even that was not enough. Now they pay to send her to NECC which is one of the best in the the country and they pay 360K a year for that. My son had PT and OT that Medicaid pays for. All in all we had our fights but got what we needed
I am very grateful to the reply. I am giving him 30 hours a week of ABA therapy through my insurance at work. Thanks god i have this job with strong insurance, otherwise, i would not be able to make it. Actually, the public school are very reluctant on letting outside therapist in. I am thinking about letting him to do VPK in his current daycare facility instead of public school. In the current daycare, a private therapist will be with him. They would allow that. The only reason i wanted to get him into public school is that i want him to get used to the public school system. He is enrolled in 'developmentally delayed' program in public school from 12:30 till 3:00 five days a week. I am not sure what they are doing. Hopefully, it is not babysitting him only. If i get the option to move somewhere else, where do you think i should go?. I need places not expensive to live in. I was thinking about Charlotte. Do you think the public school System for those kids is better?.
