Floor Time Vs ABA For 4 Years Old On Spectrum With Communication And Cognitive Problem

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Orlando, FL

I need help on this question:

Which one do you think is better?. Floor time or ABA therapy. My son has been receiving ABA therapy since Jan 2013. I am not happy about the progress. The ABA is happening in the daycare, it is not one-to-one therapy. It is a therapy within the daycare among the kids. I need somebody to tell me about the difference between them.

Floortime was life changing for my daughter but I am not dismissing ABA as each child is different. Sometimes a combination of ABA, Floortime, RDI is a well rounded approach

@A MyAutismTeam Member I love RDI too! Have you read the books? The Relationship Development Activities for (young or adolescent) children is a GREAT resource as is Youtube for ideas…helps to have someone to guide you, but not completely needed.

I read the FloorTime book and I think the method can be very appropriate for certain kids with ASD. For my child personally, however, it seemed a bit too unstructured. I much prefer Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) and that's the method I wish I could get funding for through Regional Center or health insurance.

Yes, the RDI for Young Children book has been super-helpful to me. I wish we had the financial resources to do the full RDI parent training program.

I've found ABA therapist great at honing in on skill level and needs and creating a plan that can reduce a lot of wasted time, through thoughtful incentives. Floortime, in my opinion, is a great model for parents to use at home, but only when you aren't frustrated up to your eyeballs. Because it is an intense relationship approach, you need to be fully present.
