Im feeling a little down. Just a little. I guess maybe I am being impatient? My son is 4 1/2 years old. He was diagnosed with Autism at age 2 1/2 years. He is doing really great I think. Gives really good eye contact, request for things saying "I want....please", which is awesome. He knows all of his colors, letters, shapes, numbers 1to10. And he knows all the animals names. The thing is I kinda thought by now he might be engaging in more of a back and forth conversation with us. I am expecting… read more

At 4 1/2 my son was just beginning to talk. He had 1 -2 word utterances. He is now 9 and talks up a storm, at times I can't get him to stop. Once we got him services (half way through K) he was put into a self contained classroom and now he is in an inclusion classroom. He is well liked by his peers and carries on a conversation like a champ. Be patient it will come

Our son was around the same about a year ago. Could make short sentences, had labelled hundreds of objects but didnt have any conversations. Fast forward a year he can now have conversation back and forth, can retell a an event from past, and can speak in longer sentences that are more grammatically correct. Still behind compared to peers but progressing nicely. I would encourage you to buy the book Talkability by Hanen to encourage natural conversations. Each child is unique and may have his own trajectory of course but hopefully above is encouraging.

hi, my daughter just turned 5, she is making big progress, I ask myself the same question, I still can have a conversation with her, but she lets me know what she wants , makes comments about something, asks to go to places, and I teach her how to answer back and forth questions, I am happy with her progress, and I think every kid will do it in his own time in their own time, in the meantime we are doing as much as we can as a parents , providing the help that they need,. My daughter receives many hours of therapy during the week, some days I am so tired!, an I am sure she is too, she is the one working hard , So don't worry I am sure your little one will get there sooner than you think! :-))

I so feel you on this. My daughter is 3 1/4 and I worry about the same things. When will the receptive language kick in? When will she be able to follow directions? Etc. Hang in there! I think we make more progress than we realize when we are slogging through the day to day. :)

My son is 7.... Didnt say anything until 3.... He's definitely verbal.... Not quite conversational... But can answer questions.... Tell one or two things about his day.... Certainly can converse about tv shows.... So I'd say it is s-l-o-w but progress !!!.... Patience is key!
