2nd Grader Reading At K Level
a 2nd grader reading at a k level is 90 mins a week for special ed services enough? that would be an hr and 30 mins this child is sevre adhd. PLEASE if there are any PROFESSTIONALS here answer!
they are going to give him 30 mins a day 5 x a week. i didnt have to fight him.
Did they give you his actual score? Level K on that test can range from >144-160 (2nd grade is 173-196). 90 minutes a week is definitely not enough. At a minimum he needs 30 minutes of intensive guided reading a day (usually done in a pull out model), then on top of that he would need additional services in the classroom because if he is reading that low it will affect all his other subjects. If he were my student I would be doing 30 minutes of guided reading a day (small group no more than 5 students on same level) and then I would push in to the general education class for an additional hour (maybe more depending on how well he is coping with other work). Did they give you his scores in the other sub areas because if he is also low in Language (and chances are on that test he is) that would change what I would suggest for time served.
so 90 mins is not enough? what would should i ask for??
they used a Map assessment says placing his reading Skill level at K grade equivalency lvl.
Are you referring to Fountas and Pinnell (or guided reading) level K, or reading on a Kindergarten level? If it is Fountas and Pinnell level K then your child is right on target for where he/she needs to be reading as level K is mid 2nd grade. If you are saying he/she is reading on the Kindergarten level then no 90 minutes is not enough. Different school systems do it differently but our school which has higher reading expectations would not offer a 2nd grader reading on the level K any reading support.
