Learning To Read

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Westland, MI

My son is struggling with learning to read. He is in 2nd grade now, and still reads at a pre-k level. I'd love it of I could get him up to a kindergarten or even 1st grade level by the end of the school year. Does anyone have any suggestions for reading strategies? He is high functioning. The school he goes to seems unsure/unwilling to help.

Have you had his eyes checked by a developmental optometrist (not a regular eye doctor)? I know a lot of families who saw tremendous improvement with visual therapy. I would also take him for an auditory processing evaluation by an audiology experienced with CAPD testing.

Does he have an iep? I would be insisting that reading needs to be added to it. Don't let them push you around, insist that he needs help in that area.

Another easy thing to do is read a book daily before bed. I do that daily with both of our sons as part of the bedtime routine. Our younger one (ASD) pretends to read (he can memorize books ) while I or my older one reads. This is great for not just reading but also comprehension which is usually a challenge. Lots of great learning to read books for all levels including various apps on iPad.

I had been using 2 dvds I bought last summer , Talking Words and Letter Factory (leap frog), the first one is the letters sounds and the other is how to make basic words, I see my daughter trying to make short words using the sounds she learn, my girl speak Spanish and we have been working in English since the past year, we read every day, the teacher told me to put her finger pointing the words while we are reading it helps her to focus, you can use cards for the high frequency words, hope it help u child.
