Just Diagnosed

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Belle Vernon, PA

My 2 1/2 year old son was just diagnosed with ASD. She said under DSM 4 he falls under autistic disorder but under DSM 5 it's level 2. I asked what that exactly meant and she said it pretty much means he has sever Autism. Has anyone else had this diagnosis? What should I expect?

My daughter was diagnoses with ASD about 4 years ago when she was 3. She is classified as severe by her RX. She is non verbal still at 7 is not potty trained has self injurious behavior, a limited diet, a lot of sensory issues and is in residential treatment. She has been there for six months and she is much more calm and patient in public, eats new foods, and now says about 8 words and does sign language and PECS to communicate. The choice to have her do that was extremely had but the gains she has had in such a short time is amazing.

There is hope and there are some great therapies available, some at no cost to you depending on where you are. We moved 5 states to get what we needed. The key is to advocate for your child do your research and learn your laws. Most importantly do not take no for an answer
