Hippotherapy
Has anyone tried hippotherapy? Positives? Negatives?
Oh lucky you! What a great opportunity. I hope it goes well. It is worth every penny.
@A MyAutismTeam Member - Thanks for the input! We recently bought a house with land and my sister actually manages a barn. She has a friend that works at a farm that specializes in using horses as therapy for children with special needs. Her friend offered to find a horse that would fit Madelyn's needs and work with her. She actually found a free horse that was trained to do therapy for children. I know it can be expensive caring for a horse but if it could help our daughter I think it might be worth it.
Yes, but not with a trained OT. The person my daughter sees works with all kinds of special needs kids and does wonders with them. The training is one on one and is challenging, but gentle. It has helped her a lot (physically, verbally). It is expensive if you're not able to claim it, but I would rather send her to a place where she is actively participating and interested and working with animals than sitting her in a room with an OT. That's my personal view, I would love to have both options, but I can only afford one, so its the one I choose. :)
I think all physical therapies that help with balance and self-regulation are positive. Horse-riding may be more fun and relaxing though. Haven't tried it (our son refused to go on pony last time)- but he is super excited about hockey/skating which hopefully helps do the same.
