Does Anyone Have A Child On The Spectrum That Does Not Like Dogs? What Do You Do About It?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son doesn't like dogs, they make him nervous. He is increasingly annoyed with our chocolate lab, even though she is the sweetest girl and knows to leave him alone. It makes me sad. He likes cats, but not dogs. It seems to be getting worse over time. My usual behavioral techniques are not working. Nothing seems to motivate him to be kind to her -- or any other dog. He retreats as soon as he sees one coming, he can't fall asleep if she is in the room, he basically doesn't want to do anything if… read more

My son is like that but he is actually allergic to the dog's saliva not the the dog's fur just the saliva. But he makes aweful sound if our dogs mouth gets close to him at all.

Justin is non-verbal, and we used to even have a lab. when he was a baby and before even his diagnosis, in his walker, trying to catch her and he would giggle soooo much...But she was old and passed on before he was 20 months. I cant tell u what happened but he is DEATHLY, and i mean deathly...afraid of ANY dog....(cat, hamster, ..he couldnt stand it when his sister who is 4 years younger was crawling...he jumped up on tables, beds, whatever....He's 17 now and still the same..im sorry i can't give much advice but your not alone and i realized if he didnt' like um ...then so be it...onto toilet training, then..(or whatever)...lol gl.

@A MyAutismTeam Member - great detective work by noticing it is when she is by the table at mealtime. That could be the whole issue. Your son is a few years younger than our Andrew who is now 13. When our Andrew was around 8 - we were not yet diagnosed with Aspergers and I recall at that time he was not able to verbalize what was bothering him in a situation. With time and constant coaching and learning as a parent, Andrew is now able to put words to why he does or does not care for a situation. Overstimulated by noise levels in a room is one instance - that we discovered 2 years ago while at a swim meet. Our son refused to finish the morning warmup - and refused to swim - he was in a total meltdown and just wanted to leave but could not tell us why. We figured out it was the loud echoing sounds in that particular college pool were too much for him to handle. The way we discovered it was by watching a few YouTube videos on Asperger's that spoke about it - Temple Grandin and David Jordan, the AspergerDad, John Elder Robison, and the Clay Marzo movie. This has been a huge breakthrough to watch these with our son and discuss the situations that are talked about. It was like our son was given a voice as to making the connection that he is simply built differently than the rest of the world and it is okay. Keep us updated on this. We are learning so much from each other! Be Blessed!

@A MyAutismTeam Member - Great suggestion, it could be a smell issue. The behavior seems to get worse as she gets older. I'm noticing it's happening when she is by the table at mealtime - it must be a sensory issue.
