Sleep Medication

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
O'Fallon, MO

We have an upcoming appointment with a psychiatrist to discuss putting my 4 year old on prescription sleep medication. His language is very limited as far as expressing complex feelings other then "this hurts" or "i'm mad" or "you are mean", so I am worried about side effects that he won't be able to express to us. Does anyone have any suggestion for a sleep med that has worked well for your child? At this time we are looking for something only for sleep and not any other mood stabalizing type… read more

We use melatonin too. I put off trying it for two years then finally did it. I could have kicked myself for waiting so long. He used to take about three hours to fall asleep. Now it's about 30 minutes after I give him the melatonin. And he sleeps all night. So he's making up more rested and happier, since he's getting about three more hours of sleep each night! Bear in mind that melatonin helps people fall asleep, but it doesn't help if the problem is frequent night waking. Good luck with your search!

Melatonin: It's a sleep regulator, not a sleep aid. It's natural, but "natural" treatments can have resulting side effects not immediately recognizable. Understand the relief of your child sleeping through the night; just be aware. Pediatricians nad neurogoligsts have mixed reviews on melatonin, same with anything any supplements or aids.

He has been on clonodine (may have spelled wrong) for over a month and it has been wonderful. He is also performing much better in school because he isn't tired all day.

We have used prescription catapres aka clonidine for our 15 year old since he was around the age of 5. It is a blood pressure medication that seems to work for sleep for children on the spectrum. also use melatonin. Good luck.

I use benadryl at bedtime for mine and a strict betime routine (meaning I do the same exact routine every night..pj's&pull-up, quiet disney movie and milk with his blankies and dose of benadryl liquid and he's out within an hour.)
