Has Anyone Started Their Own Support Group? And If So How Did You Do It?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Covington, VA

I live in a very small city in Virginia. In our city and the surrounding county there are a lot of children on the spectrum but no support group for the parents. You would have to drive at least 45 minutes to an hour to go to any meeting. A few parents and myself want to start a group here but we don't know how to get started. Does anyone have any advice!

YUP :) I Run the Au-some social and support group of Sheboygan County. I started by letting our Health & Human Services Dept. know. I am on one of the committees there, so it was easy. Next make up a flyer when and where you would like to meet, also that parents bring a snack/lunch for the kids, since you do not know what diets you may all be dealing with. Ask then schools/churches/daycares in your area if they would pass along the info. Word of mouth is sometimes a wonderful thing :) Ask that people rsvp you as well, so that you aren't waiting all afternoon and no one shows :)

I blog, and network with the parents that are a part of the local affiliate of Autism Society. I mention the blogging because I don't have a lot of time on my hands to spare - as I not only blog, but manage Autisable.com. That's just an extra layer of support online to discuss things and share - beyond the social aspect of sites like this one.

Finding parents locally is a challenge at times. Always good to network no matter where you are. :)

Get those parents together, find a place to meet, have some snacks, and start talking to each other. It can be that simple. Groups evolve based on the needs of the members. With those first parents, find out what people need and want from a support group. The beauty of starting a group is that it can be anything you want it to be. When we lived in Chattanooga, TN, some parents wanted a group to support themselves AND provide opportunities for their teenagers to interact with other teens who were on the spectrum. They started the Teen Aspergers Club (they have a facebook page). The group is now about two years old. It takes time, but mostly it takes someone saying, "I want a group and I am willing to do what it takes to get one going." Good luck. By the way, where in Virginia are you located?
