1st Grade Challenges For HFA In Public School
Hello all! I am having a rough time with my 6 yr old son. He just started 1st grade in a mainstream class with therapy a few times a week. He has been acting out and very disruptive since the first day. Even though they have him in therapy and he is already diagnosed with HFA, they seem not to know how to deal with him or help him work through it. Is anyone else having this trouble? I am seriously questioning if mainstream class is right for him, even though he is academically on grade… read more
I totally understand how you feel. My daughter is a public pre-school program, and she still experiences the same problems as your son. Academically, she is far ahead of her peers, so the teachers don't understand why she zones out when they are learning ABCs (while she can read at a first grade level!). We kept her in the program to help her socially and learn some structure besides inside the house. I got so frustrated last week with the teachers, but then I let it go. I didn't feel that they were listening to me. Now, they realize that I was right and I knew the "right" discipline that works with my daughter. We are not sure if public school is the answer. She doesn't really belong in special education but not quite ready to be in a mainstream class. Our family is investigating other options: charter schools, homeschool, and private schools.
For both of you Please have your child see a developmental pediatrician so he or she can evaluate appropriately. Don't let anyone tell you that it is better to wait it Isn't. Good luck. Be a Good advocate for your child as always. Laurie
1st grade was a very tough year for us, as it was the year we got the diagnosis of aspergers. My step son had been more introverted, but given the increased social interaction of 1st grade, he didnt know how to handle things, and started acting out for the first time. And, 1st grade is more taxing as there are more demands placed on kids, that can be very frustrating. We found that the tasks like organizing your desk, not calling out an answer but waiting to be called on, ensuring that he took his homework assignment home, even packing/unpacking his back pack were very difficult for my step son. A few things that helped: 1) getting the Dx of Aspergers and starting therapy with a good therapist; 2) getting a solid IEP in place with the school and getting a classroom aide to help prompt/guide my step son throughout the day, especially the more social times like lunch and recess, 3) working and succeeding to replace the first school case manager who had no empathy/understanding for aspergers, and finding a more knowledgable, helpful, empathetic case manager (in our case the school psychologist), 4) having the teacher move my step son to a desk closer to her so she could help monitor and engage my step son. It is a difficult time but hang in there.
thank u everyone for the advice....and he is definitely getting overwhelmed in class, he may need an aide or something. He is acting out because its all just too much for him and now i need to get his teacher & therapists to see it.
I Was Wondering If Anybody Can Recommend A Good Occupational Therapist Around Round Rock Or Close To Hutto, Tx. Thanks!
