Diagnosing
I am having trouble locating a dr to diagnose my son with autism. I took my son to a local college 2 years in a row and they say he is not Autistic. Hehas many characteristics so I am looking fora second opinion. I am waiting on Cardinal Glennon in st. Louis to get us in in May...ugh anyoneknow where I could get in sooner? I can sympathize with you. Here in Las Cruces, we have what we call Parents Reaching Out...I worked as an advocate with them. Each state has one of these organizations, but they are not always called the same. I would go to the Educational Administration Building for that school district and go the the Special Education department. Now, beware, because the school systems don't like these departments but by law you are entitled to have this assisitance. Now I know I am assuming that your child is school age, but even if their not, you will need this advocacy eventually. Their is another advocacy called Wrights Law and they specialize in getting parents connected to medical help in any one part of your area...I have also found a state senator to get some help. Wrights Law deals with all kinds of disabilities, syndroms and/or diseases. Don't give up, help is out there somewhere.
keep trying! It took me 3 years to get my son correctly diagnosed. I'm not sure about all states, but in Texas we have the department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (MHMR) They deal with all types of disabilities, and employ psychologists who can diagnose (they diagnosed my son yesterday). I had gone to everyone else and avoided MHMR because I didn't think they could help, but it turns out they were the only ones who really listened and believed me! Like I said, I'm not sure about what other states offer, but look into it. As parents, we know when something is going on with our kids, so all we can do is keep going.
I had the same problem with my daughter. We knew that there was something more wrong with her, if you just put the whole big picture together they would have seen the same thing that we saw. We have a 3 year old that has autism and we knew that our daughter was older and the symptoms were on a much milder scale but they were all still there. I took her to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, to the pecdiatric neurology dept. They were wonderful to us and they are very thougough.
I'm not familiar with your area but the agengies with different names is very helpful. In my area it's called Families Helping Families so the more names you have to look for the better I think. Hope it's helpful.
