Transition To Adulthood But "between The Cracks" For Service Providers?
Anyone here have an adult or transitioning teen who has been found too intelligent for government programs but not an ideal candidate for standard college and still lacks skills for employability? What solutions have you found?
We are currently hopeful with our son having been accepted to a hands-on college associate's degree in his area of interest in culinary arts. We are working to have him supported by a program, College Learning Experience, that specializes in higher functioning autistics… read more
Before your son turns 18 take him to be qualified at your local Regional Center. They will help with putting him on a list for Assisted Living. Once that is done and way before he turns 18 apply for SSI which will give him Medicaid coverage. My son lives with my husband and I and we are far from rich but make a good living. If SSI turns him down the Regional Center will pay for an advocate to fight for it. We were advised by an attorney for $20.00 fee that guardianship is difficult and not necessarily a good thing for anyone. Having just gone through a lot of this, just some thoughts for you. My son is in his second year at City College and once I taught him Mobility Training he is doing well. A Behavior Therapist though the Regional Center assist him with Organizational skills.

Update -
We are applying for SSI, just got a new update on his psych eval that will support his application for College Learning Experience to help him as he tries for his associate's degree at Art Institute, and the psych says he is very willing to testify in government services appeals. We are continuing applications for other services, too.
I appreciate the ideas! Keep them coming! :)
Michelle so sorry to hear about your struggles for Joshua.. I am sorry to say I have nothing to offer you on this front.. I at a loss to help my 22yr old , Peter.. Just reaching out to you for some emotional support.. sorry I don't have more ..
Going through the same thing here! Our daughter is receiving SSI, but does not qualify for the HCBS waiver. We need to get her some supported/assisted living to help with living on her own, but cannot find the funding.
