Not Getting Proper Services Or FAPE?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Coeur D Alene, ID

Google the term Gebser letter. It allows you to put the district on the hot seat when your child is not receiving a free and appropriate public education. It can harm
the district Financially, and it also allows you to overcome a legal standard known as deliberate indifference which is a legal standard you must overcome if your case ever goes to federal court.

How To Get Other Kids In The Family To Understand Your Child's Obstacles?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Ocala, FL

My daughter is 2 and has ASD along with a few other things including a speech delay so she doesn't communicate with us. My niece who's 7 lives with us right now and she's very handsy with my daughter. She's always grabbing her, holding on to her, picking her up, trying to hug her and cuddle her and my daughter gets extremely frustrated and ends up hurting my niece, usually either by biting, pinching or hitting her to get her off. Of course I tell my daughter to be nice but it's frustrating… read more

Help Me...my Son Won't Sleep!

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Raymore, MO

My son has never been the best sleeper since he was born. He was not a napper at all, but lately my 9 year old has not been sleeping through the night. He wakes up at 1 and 3 in the morning and doesn't go back to sleep so he's dragging when it comes to going to school. We use melatonin, which does help him go to sleep by at the very latest 9p and keep him asleep at least until 5, 530a or later. But the last few months it just isn't working. I'm getting a outlet timer so he can't turn on the TV… read more

I don’t know if this will help or not but, to me, it’s like your kiddos brain is telling him he’s awake or needs to be awake. Yeah, physical activity is great and all but if our ASD kids aren’t being… read more

Need Help To Understand Good Suburbs To Consider Moving Out Of Manhattan

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Manhattan, NY

My son requires a lot of physical inputs for regulation. I need help from the community to help me landscape the suburbs where we can move into, which have good school districts with proven track record of assistance from the state for the services?

A MyAutismTeam Member

Through my spouse and my use of due process hearings and pro se federal court actions we have brought the Coeur d alene, ID school district into the 21st. Century on educating kids with autism.

Is Refusal To Shower Code For A Deeper Concern?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Enid, OK

My 7 year old daughter fought with me not to take a shower. She stunk so I had to get her to shower right then. She got out of the shower and went to her dad and told him that she’s overwhelmed because there’s a lot going on and coming up. So we’re taking a family rest day today. How can I know that she is overwhelmed and that’s why she doesn’t want to take a shower? So I just fight through it until she can tell me?

A MyAutismTeam Member

I also admire her insight. The fact she recognizes that she's overwhelmed is HUGE, especially at as young as she is! 😊

How Do You Handle Your Child Screaming?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Enid, OK

My 7 year old daughter has been crying and screaming when we tell her that she can’t do something. She has to ask us before she can just get and use things. She gets so upset when we tell her “no” that she starts screaming and crying. So we ignore this behavior? I try to comfort her, but if this is about not getting what she wants instead of not being able to do something developmentally, then I think I need to ignore it. Right?

No we don’t have any therapy here.

Hello Melissa, you are in good company. I would suggest calling an IEP and requesting a behavior assessment. With the assessment results, they can provide services from a school behaviorist.

Conversvatorship/Guardianship

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Lawrenceville, GA

My only issues I told them I really am concerned about is the have I started conservatorship/Guardianship I did talk with a lawyer, and I believe a financial planner for special needs community. financial planner was like you may want to think about some things we don't own a house and I don't have any assets I let his teachers know as well and then I don't have that type of money to shell out for that. I will think about again
