Help Me...my Son Won't Sleep!

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Raymore, MO

My son has never been the best sleeper since he was born. He was not a napper at all, but lately my 9 year old has not been sleeping through the night. He wakes up at 1 and 3 in the morning and doesn't go back to sleep so he's dragging when it comes to going to school. We use melatonin, which does help him go to sleep by at the very latest 9p and keep him asleep at least until 5, 530a or later. But the last few months it just isn't working. I'm getting a outlet timer so he can't turn on the TV… read more

One of my son's doctors suggested adding a daily magnesium glycinate supplement with melatonin. It took a couple weeks to work but helped him. For a couple years he took a dose of hydroxine at night and that helped for awhile until a year or 2 later he got used to it. If it's possible a lot of physical activity during the day like swinging, running, or walking may help.

I don’t know if this will help or not but, to me, it’s like your kiddos brain is telling him he’s awake or needs to be awake. Yeah, physical activity is great and all but if our ASD kids aren’t being hyper-focused on anything then that can be a red flag when it comes to bed time. Our son is a very, very deep sensory seeker. We also have sleep problems with him. In a full day if he gets his physical activity in the morning and his hyper focus in the evening after nap time, he will usually sleep through the night with 2mg of melatonin (2 gummies). If any of that is interrupted his sleep will be to with or without a nap or melatonin. The struggles are real. Just something to think about. 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

Everyone's body is different and it's hard to do without sleep. I hope you have some luck finding something that works for him.

As far as the foods, I don't know what out of those he will actually eat since he has such picky habits and phases. He will eat bananas but usually he likes them in a roll-up with peanut butter and he'll eat turkey meat if we have it. He has drank tea as well I don't know that made a difference either. I don't know about the quantities that they are suggesting though because even if he is willing to try something or eats something he usually will tolerate like bananas he will only eat a small amount and refuse anymore.

He gets activity at school for recess but he gets home late and has a lot of homework because he's in an advanced class. So there's no time to go outside then and he's an only child and there aren't really a lot of children his age in our neighborhood. Even when he gets a lot of stimulation like if we go to the trampoline park or science city or swimming or anywhere else he can run around it doesn't tire him out at all. It seems to wind him up more. He takes magnesium everyday to help with his bowels as well because he's often constipated. And he is a frequent user of hydroxyzine because he has really bad seasonal allergies and eczema so it helps him not itch at night. Someone suggested valerian root, which I myself have used but I'm afraid that he is like me and that he has a high tolerance for medication and gets used to things quickly. Though the magnesium and hydroxyzine never made him sleepy anyway.
