Elementary Schools In Brooklyn

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brooklyn, NY

hello,
my son is 4 years old and on the spectrum. Im having a hard time finding an elementary school for him. He starts kindergarten in September and I feel like every school I call for open house never knows how to answer any questions about children with autism. They're very dismissive and I'm kind of getting discouraged. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

I am also in NYC and can relate. I went through the turning 5 process last year. I was told to apply to several schools while awaiting the IEP meeting which occurred sometime in May. Afterwards I… read more

At What Age (if At All) Did Your Autistic Child Start Participating In Holidays?

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Ocala, FL

I want so badly for my baby to join in on the festivities. I want her to believe in Santa, get excited to open presents, go trick or treating, do Easter egg hunts, etc. Those of you who have kids who participate in holidays, at what age did it start? I obviously know I can't make her as she's not neurotypical but I'm just looking for some hope cause I always envisioned being a mom that did all the fun stuff with her baby.

Siblings

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Evansville, IN

How do you explain to your 8yr that his baby brother has autism, and that he can’t be mean to him when he doesn’t listen or destroys his stuff. We haven’t started ABA therapy yet, and it’s a recent diagnosis so we’re all adjusting to this new life style for our little guy.

A MyAutismTeam Member

Thank you guys for the help! And the amazing advice! I will probably have a ton more questions so I hope I’m not bothering anyone with all of them!
