ABA Services

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey parents, id like to know your thoughts or experiences with ABA therapy. My little one receives OT as well as speech. Our pediatrician recommends ABA for us but I've heard mixed things about this type of therapy and don't know how to feel about it.
Thanks all 😊

Thank you Catherine for sharing. I'm sorry it was a rough time for your family and I'm so glad you've seen success. My little one is very resistant to direction from others.. other than me.. id hate to hear him upset but you're right it can be a part of the process to get them where they need to be ♥️

The best thing would be to find an ABA therapy place and have your child assessed to see if it would be beneficial for them. That's what I did for my son. The ABA therapy place reviewed his IEP and thought the school was doing a great job meeting goals. They recommended social skills therapy.

Good morning:) Both my kids received ABA services in our home, when they were young.
The therapy session was for
2 hours & they came 3x a week.
Ok..my thoughts on it:

It was terrible & heartbreaking to listen to & experience, especially in the beginning weeks.
They would be in the living-room & I would go into one of the bedrooms. The girls are 10 years apart but acted similarly towards the therapy. They would yell, run away & sometimes cry.
However…it was very very helpful to them & to us & I’m very glad we did it!!!!! Their behaviors improved, their speech improved, listening improved, etc. I feel strongly that it made them as high functioning as they are!!!
It’s a tough decision but I can only give you my opinion & that opinion is to try it.
Even though the girls would get upset, I think it was probably harder on me. After the therapist would leave they would act themselves & I’d still be depressed.
You can also always stop it if you feel it’s not effective. Although it takes some time to see results.
I wish you the best of luck 😊

My 5 year old does ABA 8 hours a day 5 days a week. He adores his “teachers” and has a great time. He has really learned to express himself and the aggressive behaviors are improving. Why would any learning of skills be negative?

Thank you so much guys! OT is very helpful for my son but his speech therapy.. not so much. It leaves him upset for the remainder of the day & seems a bit advanced for where he's at. I'm going to contact local ABA centers and see if we can have an assessment if so maybe add that in and come back to speech at a later time. I love this plan 😊
