8-year Old Won't Sleep Alone

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Lakewood, CA

My son (level 1 autism) panics at the thought of sleeping alone in his room. Generally speaking, throughout the day, he also doesn't like to be in any room alone and will go wherever I go throughout the house. Every night I have to sit or lay in bed with him until he falls asleep before I sneak out. Obviously this can't continue for much longer, esp. as he's heading into his teenage years. I don't know if leaving him to freak out in his room alone is what's needed to help him learn to adjust to… read more

Give him confidence @A MyAutismTeam Member,
Make him some 'Monster-Spray'...
Get a cheap spray bottle:
-Fill 3/4's full of water.
-Add some Baking Soda.
-Add some Fabric Softener.
-Add some 'Lavender' Oil.
-Shake well.
And tell him that this secret formula rids any and all monsters from under the bed, and from inside closets and wherever else he may believe monsters to thrive.
And it'll freshen his bedroom.

My oldest was like this until he was about 7 I know it’s hard but he will slowly grow into being alone in his room. I agree with @A MyAutismTeam Member. One thing that helped my son was a weighted blanket. I’m not sure if it reminded him of me laying with him but it definitely helped.

I can relate to your situation with my five-year-old. I've been by his side for as long as I can remember, sneaking out once he falls asleep. I've noticed that during his midday nap, he sometimes tells me to leave, which shows he is gaining confidence and becoming more comfortable with sleeping by himself. However, the nighttime routine is still a bit of a struggle for my son. We have recently started using a weighted blanket and keeping a nightlight on.

…just as an add on. It would have to be a consistent strategy everywhere for it to hopefully work:)

Just a thought I have, maybe get your son to completely decorate his room according to his interests or likes. Then he will want to play and rest in his version of perfect bedroom
