How Do You Know And At What Age Do You Know If You're Child Is High Or Low Functioning?
High or low function and child
@A MyAutismTeam Member I didn't know you were autistic, too! Welcome to the club 😉
Holly8....I am feeling the same feelings. My son is extra smart and very intuitive and empathetic...but he is also non-verbal and has massive fits. We had a great development pediatrician and she sent all of the application information for filing disability for our son. I refused, I could not/would not put that label on my beautiful, miracle baby.....it took me a year.... it's not that we don't accept our baby but putting that label on them is VERY difficult. Deep breaths and patience and know that it doesn't make them any LESS, it only makes them more unique and....do I dare say.... BETTER than what the rest of the world is....they (our sweet babies) should be acknowledged as BETTER than what simple human beings accept... I theorize that the boom/understanding/surge of autism in children is only to push the rest of humanity. We are taught, at least in Oklahoma, that we are supposed to protect the vulnerable....who more vulnerable is an innocent beautiful child with ANY disability. Keep pushing momma, always be the voice for your baby, always follow your instincts, and watch your baby and your family flourish!!!! You got this!!!!
I would see when they enter first grade or start elementary school. I had a hard time learning the new subjects. You will discover if the child needs special education and an individual teacher. I had that when I first moved to the United States. I had a classmate, who stood by my side and became my best friend. Keep in mind the teacher initiated it. I had trouble with reading and comprehension especially. Those are the signs to look for. Once I started 3rd grade in a new school, I still had trouble with math but was not part of the special ed. I was in the normal class setting from 3rd grade to 5th grade. I would say I was high functioning since I could talk, understand some lessons, and take care of myself. I still had trouble making friends. I made a new friend in 4th grade and we still are connected from a distance.
Ash will be 8 in November still non verbal no words at all. Needs help with all life skills minus using toilet at home I have potty trained her so many times I lost count but she's been good for a yr. But doesn't know how wipe or wash hands so I always go in bathroom to help. Same with school her 1;1 has go in stahl to help. But she has amazing fine motor skills great at drawing line drawings and best gross motor skills that girl can climb!! So she's level 3 but does have a few skills 🥰 there's def more severe kids in her special Ed classroom, do thankful ash does have few things really good at! I think they call them severe when completely non verbal my guess lol :) I've been told I am also autistic so looking back on life things do add up.
I still hear them say globally delayed, but usually her team just says severe .. I guess I've known for several years ash is not high functioning, she needs a ton of support with everything. Ash will be 8 in November. Shes in the smaller special Ed classroom 6 kids total ( where all the more severe kiddos are) her teacher said ash most likely will be in special Ed her whole school career. She does go into general Ed with her 1;1 she only does 10 ish mins a day in there and that's if she doesn't have a meltdown, I get videos usually just playing doing her own thing while general Ed kids are learning. :)
