I Am Now A Step-father To A 19YO Daughter. I Have So Much To Learn And Undertand. Does Anyone Know Of Resources That Can Help Me Learn?
Hello!
I too am relatively new to autism. My loved one, a 21yo was diagnosed 2 yrs ago.
I have found helpful information on Facebook groups. Some are run by adult autistics, others by parents of autistics. All exist to provide support and understanding. I have learned so much from autistics themselves.
The most informative and helpful FB site I have found is called Autism Discussion Page, run by Bill Nason. He wrote a series of books on autism which explains clearly how the autistic mind perceives and responds to others and to their environment. His posts and books (though targeted at younger children) have helped me understand my child's behaviors better.
Most of all, I have learned tremendously from my child.
Their lived experience is quite different from what I had perceived. It was spending loads and loads of time with them after their diagnoses, listening to them with my blinders off, that I have come to fully understand their struggles; their constant state of being on high alert, confusion, fear, rage and pain they feel beneath their calm demeanor. It wasn't easy to get to this point as I made so many mostly communication mistakes along the way, assuming and presuming things about them.
Kind of a long winded answer. Nevertheless, welcome to the group.
Welcome :)
Hello and welcome! There are plenty of articles and videos under the resources section of this site. You can also check Autism Society of America website.
Feel free to ask questions here as well.
