Does it get better? YES.
Do they make progress? YES.
Does their condition improve? It Can.
Do they get increasingly independent? They Can.
Can they function as adults? Absolutely.
They will also Regress, Not have the ability to communicate their needs, have the 'Flight or Flight' response often, and many other things associated with ASD.
Ask, Learn, use what you can, and keep moving forwards.

Thank you! That does help me. My daughter is 8 years old and high functioning. She is making progress. I’m trying to aide her in that as much as I can, which means that I’m trying not to do everything for her and let her learn things herself and make mistakes safely.

It all depends on the person; there are some who become independent one day, while there are others who may need care for the duration of their lives. The common denominator, though, is that EVERYONE makes progress! :)

I have an adult autistic son. It has gotten easier because he is more independent now. He still has challenges and struggles, but I know this journey is ongoing. There is always something new to learn.

My son is 41 and still showing progress. Especially more recently but he is still non speaking. However, he makes his needs and opinions known by FCing with only me, his Mom. He is living with us as he was not treated well when with workers living in his own house. He now has 4 newspaper routes and I accompany him because he ignores people when they speak to him. We moved from Manitoba to BC and he said ( on his Qwerty board)about the move, "Everything is perfect , but I have to work".
