Daycare For Autistic Toddler

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My oldest son just got diagnosed with autism he’s 3 years old. I’ve had to constantly pick him up from daycare only after i started receiving subsidy for it. They keep telling me he’s a safety hazard to the other children and teachers when he has a meltdown but has never acted like that with babysitters or at home only there. I’m in the process of finding a teacher to be with him while he’s there but I don’t know if I should just find a new daycare as well.

He already had that when he was at that daycare. He had 2 teachers from early intervention one for occupational and one for developmental therapy going to the daycare once a week. Unfortunately he was kicked out because the waitlist for an aid to be with him is very long and they wouldn’t wait any longer I’m hopeful that him going into a different setting will help and maybe they’ll have more staff and be more understanding and the teachers will be a little more patient with him there.

Get your dr to send a referral to a center that will provide ABA therapy it's early intervention and they specifically deal with behavior they generally also provide speech, occupational, physical, and development therapy.

You may look at several centers my daughter is in her 3rd program in 2 year period. All of hers are therapy centers for autism. The first one looked good lots of staff peers and accommodations. But mine kept getting bit by a nonverbal child and we aren't talking just a nip, these were deep bite marks after 5 bites in 6 months I was so mad I removed her, the second therapy center was OK we had home services from them prior to her 3rd birthday. She didn't have peers and after the 30th identical art pages came home I was not happy then they called dcfs some ppl call it cps on me in sort they accused me of putting cigarettes out on my kids face. I wa pissed now I removed her from that program her development delayed there I say it was due to lack of peers. Then false accusations. I started. Looking again she is in a program now with peers that don't assault her and I feel like she is progressing nicely. Therapy, daycare, school all will not be a good fit it might take a few places before your kid gets in the place that does him best.

No I live in PA. I didn’t realize my profile said that and I’m not sure why it did. But there’s not very many resources for kids with autism near me. I’ve even talked with my kids doctors, the assistance office, teachers, and other parents with children on the spectrum on what my options could be and I get the same answer and that’s early intervention and he already is apart of that program.

Your in Alaska? I can imagine up there getting service would be almost impossible. And I'm guessing moving to the lower 48 states is just not an option. I'm so sorry I'm at a loss for suggestions.
